Utah is one of the more demanding climates a vinyl wrap will live through. Elevation UV is about 25% more intense than sea level. Winter salt sits on cars for weeks. Summer afternoons hit 100°F. Snow canyons throw road grit constantly. A wrap that’s easy to maintain in Phoenix or Charleston needs a different care routine here.

This is the routine we hand out at delivery to every Logan customer. Follow it and your wrap will outlast its 7-year warranty period in good shape.

The weekly basics

Wash every 1–2 weeks. The biggest mistake we see is letting road salt and dust accumulate. Both etch into vinyl topcoat over time. A 30-minute wash every 10 days is meaningfully better than a deep detail every 6 weeks.

Two-bucket method, hand wash, microfiber mitt. One bucket for clean shampoo water, one for rinsing the mitt. Don’t reuse soiled water on a clean panel.

pH-neutral shampoo, no degreasers. Meguiar’s Gold Class, Adam’s Car Shampoo, Chemical Guys Mr. Pink, Gyeon Bathe. Skip dish soap, skip degreasers, skip anything labeled "wax-stripping."

Rinse before contact. Knock the loose grit off with a hose first. Touching dirt against the wrap with a mitt is what creates micro-scratches.

Microfiber drying towel, no chamois. Pat-dry, don’t drag.

What to absolutely avoid

Automatic brush car washes. They will scratch satin and matte finishes. The defects cannot be polished out of vinyl. Touchless automatic washes are fine, but the cheaper "in-and-out brush" version is the fastest way to ruin a satin black wrap.

Wax on matte or satin. Wax fills the matte structure and creates uneven gloss. There is no recovery from this short of a wrap reinstall. Matte and satin finishes need vinyl-specific sealants like 3M Synergy or Carpro Reload, not wax.

Pressure washers within 12 inches of an edge. A 3,000 PSI wand at close range can lift even a properly installed edge. Stay 18+ inches back and angle the spray so it’s parallel to seams, not perpendicular into them.

Freezing temperature washes. If it’s below 32°F, water will freeze in panel gaps and tweak edge bonding as it expands. We see this mostly in January and February in Logan. Wait for a day above 40°F or pay for an inside wash bay.

Bird droppings and tree sap (the wrap killers)

Both of these will etch into vinyl topcoat if left for more than 24 hours.

The right move:

Wet a clean microfiber towel.
Lay it on the dropping/sap for 5 minutes to soften.
Wipe gently in a single direction. Do not scrub.
Rinse with soapy water.

If you’re unsure, call our 24-hour hotline before scrubbing. Aggressive removal from a still-hardened dropping is more damaging than the dropping itself.

Utah salt season (December – March)

Salt is the hardest part of Utah ownership for a wrap. Two strategies that work:

Frequent quick rinses. Even a 5-minute hose rinse twice a week through salt season prevents salt from sitting and etching. Don’t wait for a "real" wash; just knock it off.

A sacrificial ceramic top coat. A consumer ceramic spray (Gyeon Cure, Carpro Reload, Adam’s Ceramic Spray) every 4 – 6 weeks adds a hydrophobic layer that makes salt rinse off cleanly. Can be done in 10 minutes after a wash. A pro-grade ceramic coating over the wrap is the ultimate version of this strategy.

High-elevation UV (year-round)

Utah’s elevation makes UV the slow background killer for vinyl. Two things to know:

Garage parking matters more here than at sea level. A wrapped vehicle that lives in a garage will outlive a daily-parked one by 1 – 2 years.

A ceramic coating over the wrap doubles UV resistance. Pro-grade ceramic adds a sacrificial layer that absorbs UV before it reaches the vinyl topcoat. We strongly recommend ceramic-over-wrap for any matte or satin install in Utah.

Canyon driving and gravel

If you do Big Cottonwood Canyon, Little Cottonwood Canyon, Parley’s Canyon, or Mill Creek Canyon regularly: PPF on the front clip and lower rockers is not optional. The vinyl wrap on top will not survive frequent gravel exposure without a PPF layer underneath.

After a canyon trip, do a quick rinse before you put the car away. Gravel dust contains abrasive minerals that scratch vinyl when later wash mitts drag them across the panel.

Your 30-day check-in

Every wrap install we do includes a 30-day check-in appointment. Bring the car back, we inspect every edge and seam, do a complimentary wash, and adjust anything that needs it. Most edge issues are visible at 30 days but invisible at 90, so this checkpoint matters.

Your 6-month and 12-month services

We offer two scheduled tune-up services:

6-month wrap inspection ($75): Full edge inspection, panel-edge re-heat where needed, complimentary deep clean. Recommended for satin and matte finishes.

Annual ceramic top-coat refresh ($150): Recommended for any wrap with a ceramic coating, restores hydrophobic performance.

Skipping these isn’t catastrophic, but a wrap that lives through both services every year typically outlives the warranty period by 12 – 18 months. Worth it.
