Color Change Vehicle Wraps

There is a wide quality range in vehicle wrapping, and most of it is invisible until 18 months in. A proper color change starts with a multi-stage prep: clay-bar decontamination, IPA wipe-down, and a hot-bay cure cycle so the vinyl bonds to a chemically clean surface. Door handles, badges, mirror caps, side moldings, and rear lights are then removed (not masked) so the film wraps cleanly behind every edge. Knifeless tape is used at every seam so we never put a blade on your paint. We finish with a heat-set on every wrapped edge to lock the adhesive. Cheaper installs skip the disassembly, leave seams visible at handle bezels, and lift within a season — especially in the Cache Valley’s freeze-thaw climate. Ours don’t.

We work primarily with three film brands depending on color goal and vehicle. 3M 2080 is the workhorse — the deepest matte and satin colors, lifetime adhesive performance, and the best installer warranty in the industry. Avery Dennison Supreme Wrapping Film has the strongest gloss palette and the most precise color-shift options. Oracal 970 Super Gloss wins for ultra-glossy custom colors with paint-like depth, popular on Tesla Model S Plaid and exotics. Arlon and Mactac are stocked for specific specialty finishes (brushed steel, carbon fiber 4D, paint-effect liquid metal). Satin Black (3M 2080-S12) — the runaway favorite on Tesla Model 3, Model Y, and BMW M3. Looks aggressive without screaming, hides washing micro-marring, and survives the region’s salt season. Satin Pearl White (Avery SW900-101-S) — for owners who love white but want depth, especially on Model S and Mercedes G-Wagons. Gloss Riviera Blue / Metallic Aurora Blue — popular on Mustangs and Corvettes coming out of the downtown Logan garage scene. Color-Shift Psychedelic / Chameleon — takes a 4Runner or Wrangler from forgettable to "what is THAT" at every Friday-night meet. Matte Military Green — every Tacoma and Bronco owner across Cache Valley wants this; we do roughly two a month. Brushed Black Metallic — quietly the best finish for Cybertruck color match because of how the panels reflect at off-angles.

A high-end PPG paint job at a body shop runs $12,000 to $25,000+ on most vehicles. A premium full color-change wrap is typically $4,000 to $7,000 — about a third of the cost. Paint is permanent: change your mind, and you pay again. Wrap is reversible: peel it in three years and your factory paint comes back unmarked. Paint takes 2–4 weeks; wrap takes about a week. The one place paint still wins is panel-to-panel uniformity over a 10+ year horizon: a wrap has a service life of roughly 5–7 years at Cache Valley elevation before the topcoat starts to chalk. For most owners that’s a feature, not a bug — by year five, the urge to re-spec is usually already there.

Day 1 — Vehicle intake, paint inspection, panel disassembly. We document every existing chip, swirl, or rock damage with a 50+ photo report so there’s no question whose mark is whose at the end. Days 2–3 — Decontamination wash, clay, IPA wipe, panel-by-panel application. We work in our climate-controlled bay (68–75°F, low humidity) so the adhesive sets correctly. Days 4–5 — Edge tucks, knifeless seams, post-heat at every transition. Day 6 — Reassembly, post-heat cure, customer walkthrough. We hand over a care kit, the vinyl batch number for warranty registration, and a 30-day check-in appointment.

Hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo, two-bucket method, every 1–2 weeks in the Cache Valley’s dry/dusty climate. Avoid automatic car washes with rotating brushes — they will leave swirl marks on satin and matte finishes that cannot be polished out. Skip waxing on matte and satin (it changes the finish); a dedicated vinyl sealant like 3M Synergy or Carpro Reload is fine. Bird droppings and tree sap need to come off in under 24 hours — they will etch into vinyl.
